Stroll Apple Creek
On October 17th the Eagle Nature Foundation will be conducting two strolls through Apple Creek. The first will be a stroll through the Apple Creek Arboretum and Prairie at 10:00 am and the second will be a Stroll through Apple Creek Woods, at 2:00 in the afternoon. Between the two Strolls there will be a catered lunch, 50/50 raffle and live and silent auctions at 12:00 in the Apple River Presbyterian Church to help the Foundation raise needed money for its efforts to preserve this habitat and study the bald eagle.
The cost for taking these strolls led by Master Naturalist, Terrence Ingram, will be $10 for either stroll. The cost for either stroll and lunch will be $20 for adults and $12 for children under 17. The cost for a full day including both strolls and lunch, will be $25 for adults and $15 for children under 17.
Persons going on either or both strolls should register in advance of the event, when possible. If a person plans to eat lunch then registration fees must be received by Oct. 12, so the food can be planned. Registration fees should be sent to ENF, 300 East Hickory Street, Apple River, IL 61001, or call 815-594-2306.
Apple Creek has not been farmed for over 20 years and nature is gradually changing the habitats that are found therein. The prairie has been burnt almost every year and new species of plants are constantly being found that have grown from the seeds that have been in the soil for 70 years or more. The woods is changing from an Oak Opening in the prairie to a climax Maple-Basswood Forest. More than 200 years ago the Indians were camped on this land.
