ENF Sponsoring 2018 Bald Eagle Bus Tours

Apple River) Once again the Eagle Nature Foundation will be sponsoring 4-hour Bald Eagle Bus tours to see bald eagles wintering on the Mississippi River. Two February tours are scheduled two Saturdays, Feb. 10 and Feb. 24, 2018. Both tours will leave at 8:00 am sharp each Saturday from the parking lot of the Best Western Motel located on Hwy 20 on the east side of Galena and return about 12:30.

The tours will be led by Terrence Ingram who has been leading Bald Eagle Bus Tours for over 50 years. Each tour will visit five historic wintering communities of bald eagles as well as the locations for seven historic bald eagle nests, some of which may be occupied by nesting bald eagles. With any luck participants on each tour will be able to see bald eagles flying, fishing, perching and/or migrating. Past tours normally have recorded 30 to 40 bald eagles with some tours having seen as many as 450 bald eagles during the 4 hour tour.

During the tours Mr. Ingram will be discussing the life history of the bald eagle, as well as its habits and efforts the nation has taken to preserve the bald eagle from extinction. The results of ENF’s Mid-winter Bald Eagle Counts indicate that the bald eagle population on the Mississippi River is declining and may even be lower than it was during the mid 1960’s. Because of this Mr. Ingram cannot promise to see many bald eagles during the tour, unless we are lucky enough to have a community of bald eagles moving through the area.

The cost for each 4-hour tour is $75 per seat per adult and children under 17, $50 each. Groups of 4 or more will receive a discounted rate of $65 per adult and $40 per child. Anyone desiring a brochure for these tours is invited to call ENF, 815-594-2306.

Three Galena Motels offer discounted rates for anyone going on these tours. They are Best Western, Country Inn & Suites, and Ramada.
