Eagle Nature Field Day

Apple River) The Eagle Nature Foundation is planning to hold an "Eagle Nature Field Day" in Apple River on Oct. 5, 2013. The day will begin at 10:00 am with a tour through ENF's Headquarters at 300 East Hickory Street in Apple River. Next item on the day's agenda is an 11:30 luncheon at the Apple River Methodist Church, followed by both a noisy and silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Then at 1:30 Terry Ingram, Master Naturalist, will lead people on a nature walk through the Apple Creek Arboretum, Apple Creek Prairie and Apple Creek Woods looking for birds, plants and animals.

Anyone planning to take this tour should wear long sleeves and bring binoculars as well as their bird and wildflower field guides. It will be less than a two mile hike over rough ground, so they should wear hiking shoes and be dressed for the weather. Sites to be enjoyed on the walking tour include: many fall native prairie plants; an original oak opening in the Northern Illinois prairie, with its 2-300 year old oak trees; a 40+ year old black walnut woods; a climax maple/basswood woods; rock quarries which furnished the rock for the barns at Apple Creek Farm; and view Apple Creek Apiaries' home bee yard. Specific unique items that may be seen in this 250+ plant species Arboretum, include southern blackberry lilies and Paw Paw trees, a 300+ year old Burr Oak tree, and Eurasian Collared Doves.

Registration fees which include the luncheon and tour packets containing maps and bird and wildflower checklists are $25 per person, $20 per person for two or more, and $15 per child, 12 and under. Registration fees must be received by by ENF before Sept. 27, 2013.
